The Dryer Box: A Small Detail That Solves a Big Problem
A clothes dryer seems like a simple appliance. But the way it vents — and how that venting is installed during construction — has significant implications for safety, efficiency, and the everyday usability of the laundry room. At Eiger Homes, we install a dryer ventilation box in every home we build. Here's why.
The Standard Approach and Its Problems
In standard construction, the dryer vent exits through the wall directly behind where the dryer will sit. This means the dryer must be positioned several inches away from the wall to accommodate the vent pipe — wasting space in the laundry room and often leaving the washer and dryer misaligned.
More seriously, the sharp bend required to connect the dryer to a wall vent creates a kink in the vent pipe. Kinked dryer vents are a significant fire hazard — lint accumulates at the restriction point, and restricted airflow reduces drying efficiency. This is one of the leading causes of dryer fires in residential homes.
How the Dryer Box Solves It
A dryer ventilation box is a recessed box installed inside the wall cavity during framing. It provides a smooth, generous pathway for the vent pipe — eliminating the sharp bend entirely. The dryer can be positioned tight against the wall, saving space and aligning perfectly with the washer.
The benefits:
Eliminates kinked vent pipes — removes the primary cause of lint buildup and fire risk
Improves dryer efficiency — unrestricted airflow means faster drying and lower energy use
Saves space — dryer sits flush against the wall
Improves aesthetics — washer and dryer align cleanly
The Result
A laundry room that looks better, functions better, and is meaningfully safer. The dryer box is installed during framing — an easy decision at that stage, and essentially impossible to retrofit later. We make it on every build.
That's #BuiltBetter.
