Cedar Sills: An Extra Layer of Moisture Protection
Water is the single greatest threat to the long-term integrity of a home. Most water intrusion issues don't happen dramatically — they happen slowly, through small gaps and subtle vulnerabilities that accumulate over years. At Eiger Homes, we think carefully about every point where water could enter, and we address each one proactively.
One of those points is the window sill.
The Problem
During heavy, wind-driven rain, moisture can find its way behind window flashing and settle on the window sill. In standard construction, if that moisture sits long enough, it can eventually work its way into the wall assembly — leading to rot, mold, and costly repairs down the road.
The Solution: Angled Cedar
On every window in every home we build, we install an angled cedar board on the sill. The angle is simple but effective: it directs any moisture that reaches the sill back toward the exterior, preventing it from pooling or running into the wall.
Why cedar? Cedar is naturally resistant to moisture and rot — making it the right material for a detail that exists specifically to manage water. It's a precise, durable solution for a specific vulnerability.
Why It Matters
Most of the time, moisture never reaches the window sill at all. But in a driving rainstorm, it can. And when it does, the cedar sill does its job quietly and completely, protecting the wall assembly beneath it.
It's a small detail. It's the right detail. That's #BuiltBetter.
